Kardamaina (often written Kardamena) grew from a fishing village into one of the main resorts of Kos. The reasons to come are simple: a long beach, a working harbour, warm sea from late spring to autumn, and an easy base for the rest of the island.

This guide sticks to what helps you plan: how to arrive, what to see, where the family-friendly beaches are, and which day trips are worth the time.

The best day trips

Nisyros is the headline trip, but Kos town with its castle and ancient sites is easy by bus or car, and in season you can even take a ferry across to Bodrum in Turkey (bring your passport).

Further afield

The far west of the island has Kefalos and Paradise Beach; in the hills, Zia village is the classic sunset stop.

Quiet corners and villages

Away from the seafront, Kos has hill villages such as Zia and Pyli, and the medieval Antimachia castle is just inland from Kardamaina. See things to do for a short list that works for families and couples.

Choose your base by the beach, not just the price. A hotel within a few minutes’ walk of the sand makes every day easier, especially with children. See where to stay.
