Kefalos is the end of the road on Kos, and the reason to go is the coast. The village sits on a hill above a wide bay. Below it you find sandy stretches, a quiet harbour and a small island joined to the shore by a short causeway of rock.
What to see
- Kefalos village. White houses on a ridge, a few tavernas and sunset views over the bay.
- Kefalos Bay. A long beach with room to spread out and a more open feel than Kardamaina. Wind can pick up in July and August.
- Agios Stefanos. The ruins of an early Christian basilica stand on the shore, with Kastri island and its chapel just offshore. Stay on the marked paths around the ruins.
- Kastri island. A small rocky island with a white chapel, reachable on foot in calm conditions along the shallow sea floor. Check conditions before you wade across.
Drive early and combine stops. Start at Agios Stefanos in the morning, swim at Kefalos Bay and have lunch in the village. See also Paradise Beach, which is close by.
Getting there from Kardamaina
By car or scooter it takes about half an hour. A taxi is simple for a group, and the local bus runs in the season. If you do not want to drive, a boat day trip reaches the west coast bays from the sea (see boat trips).
More coast to compare: beaches near Kardamaina. For a base near both, see hotels in Kardamaina.
