Kos town is the best half-day or full day out on land. It sits on the north coast, about 30 km from Kardamaina, and packs a Knights’ castle, Greek and Roman ruins and the island’s main harbour into a walkable center.

Our top pick: Kos: Island Tour to Asklepieion and Zia

What to see

  • Castle of the Knights (Neratzia). A 15th century fortress on the harbour, built by the Knights of St John. You can walk in and across the moat bridge.
  • Ancient agora and Roman remains. The ruins sit in the middle of the town, next to the shops and cafes.
  • Asklepieion. A hillside healing sanctuary dedicated to the god of medicine, about 4 km from the center, with terraces and views of the sea.
  • Harbour and old town. A pleasant place for a coffee or lunch.

Go early for the Asklepieion. It is exposed and hot in summer. Pair it with a late morning in town and a lunch in the shade.
