Zia village on Kos: sunset views and a day out from Kardamaina

Zia is the best-known village in the hills of Kos, on the slopes of Mount Dikeos. It is busy at sunset, calm earlier in the day, and easy to reach from Kardamaina by car, taxi or an organised trip.

Zia sits on a green slope of Mount Dikeos, with shaded lanes, souvenir and craft shops, cafes and a view down to the coast. It is a half-day trip from Kardamaina and a popular add-on to a drive through the villages of Kos.

What to do in Zia

  • Walk the lanes. Local products, crafts and small chapels line the main street. Prices in the tourist shops are higher than in town, so ask first.
  • Sunset view. The terraces face the coast. Arrive before sunset to get a place.
  • Mount Dikeos. Paths lead higher up the mountain for those who want a walk. Take water and sturdy shoes.
  • Pyli and the hill villages. The nearby villages are quieter. See things to do.

Go in the late afternoon and stay for the sunset. Drive back carefully: the road is narrow, with bends and no lighting in places.

Getting there

The simplest option is a rental car or a taxi from Kardamaina. If you prefer not to drive the mountain road at dusk, join a sunset transfer or an island tour. Public buses reach Zia via Kos town, but times are limited, so check them first. The route and timing are in our getting around guide.
